Dr. Thomas Mitchell is a computer scientist, researcher and electronic musician lecturing computer music at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His interests cover many aspects of adaptive sound design and interactive music performance/composition. He enjoys working with artists and has a genuine passion for developing technology that enables new modes of interaction and expression.
Tom first met Imogen at a good friend’s wedding and soon afterwards began collaborating on developing the Gloves. Tom was the initial partner in action for Imogen and leads the engineering of the gloves from a coding and software architecture point of view and effectively acts as a CTO for the company.
Originally he was responsible for the technical developments of the system, from selecting and integrating the motion tracking equipment to designing and implementing the software. Now, he oversees many technical aspects of the project with his primary focus being the development of the software that mediates between the gloves and the interface that Imogen controls. He is also responsible for the design and development of the recognition algorithms that identify when a gesture has been made.He is core in every step of the development, siding Imogen on making her vision a reality but also seeing/seeking the potential for other applications in music and beyond.
